Matthias Miersch, the General Secretary of the SPD, has confirmed that Lars Klingbeil will be appointed as the Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor in the upcoming government. In a statement made on Wednesday during the presentation of the results of the party’s member survey on the coalition agreement, Miersch stated that the decision was made “in close consultation and at the suggestion of Saskia Esken and myself.”
However, the complete “government team” will be unveiled on Monday. According to Miersch, Klingbeil will be responsible for assembling the team, with the task of selecting “men and women for the future cabinet, taking into account experience and expertise, but also ensuring that new faces are visible, as we had promised the base.”
The results of the party’s member survey showed that 84.6% of participants voted in favor of forming a coalition with the CDU and CSU. With this decision, the way seems clear for CDU leader Friedrich Merz to be appointed as the new Chancellor on the upcoming Wednesday.
