For the first quarter of 2026 (January through March), accommodation businesses in Germany registered a total of 86.7 million overnight stays. According to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this figure marks a 2.5% increase compared to the previous year’s period. However, it remains 2.3% below the record high of 88.7 million stays recorded during the same period in 2024.
Looking at the quarterly breakdown, domestic tourism saw the strongest growth, hitting 72.0 million stays-an increase of 2.9% compared to the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, overnight stays by foreign guests climbed to 14.6 million, reflecting a 0.8% rise year-on-year.
In the specific month of March 2026, 33.6 million overnight stays were logged for both German and foreign tourists, representing a 3.1% increase over March 2025. Within March, the number of domestic overnight stays surged by 3.8% to reach 28.3 million. Conversely, stays by foreign guests experienced a minor decline, dropping 0.4% to 5.2 million.
