Jan van Aken, the Co-Chair of the Left Party, sees a danger for democracy in the cabinet under CDU leader Friedrich Merz. According to van Aken, who spoke to RTL and ntv on Monday, there are too many business executives in the cabinet and no one who understands the struggles of ordinary workers. “There is not a single worker or trade unionist. I think this is a truly terrifying cabinet and I believe it is also a threat to democracy when there are only people who don’t know what to do with all their money” he said. While he acknowledges that there may be one or two ministers who know how to run a business, he believes that they need to be accompanied by individuals who understand the challenges faced by those who struggle to make ends meet. “These people must also be able to feel what it means to push for better working conditions against employers through trade unions” van Aken added.
