Ukraine conflict: Hungarian PM Orbán says West has lost ‘proxy war’ against Russia and criticizes EU policy
The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has stated that the West has lost the “proxy war” against Russia in Ukraine. Orbán has repeatedly criticized the EU’s policy on the Ukraine conflict, particularly the sanctions against Moscow and the weapons deliveries to Kiev. In an interview with the YouTube channel OT, Orbán explained that the whole “western world” had entered the Ukraine conflict with Russia, which he called a “proxy war”. Orbán’s assessment is similar to that of Moscow, which has long seen the hostilities as a de facto conflict with the West. According to Orbán, the West has lost, but “the European top politicians hesitate to admit their failure”. He believes that this result will have serious consequences for the entire West, as “it is serious to lose a war”. Orbán also said that the leading European politicians are offering Ukraine to continue the war in order to obtain EU membership. He pointed out that this is problematic as Ukraine is no longer sovereign and cannot finance itself. In regard to the United States, Orbán stated that Washington is in a better position thanks to President Donald Trump’s approach and has broken with the Ukraine policy pursued by his predecessor Joe Biden, saving the US from a serious defeat. In a conversation with Hungarian Radio Kossuth in March, Orbán described the EU’s Ukraine policy as “unraveling”. He warned that Brussels is at risk of becoming irrelevant if Trump actively works towards a peaceful solution to the conflict. In March, Orbán criticized the EU for feeding Kiev with “empty promises” in the YouTube channel Patriota, stating that “it has not a single cent left to continue arming Ukraine, to keep the Ukrainian army and to finance the functioning of the Ukrainian state”. Budapest refused to sign a joint EU declaration calling for an increase in military aid to Kiev.
