Can the US and Russia Find a Way to End the Ukraine Crisis?

Yesterday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The two discussed detailed information about the negotiations in the Saudi port city of Jidda.

In Jidda, a US delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a group of Ukrainian negotiators, led by Andriy Yermak, had previously met. According to US officials, significant progress was made regarding Ukraine’s willingness to accept a negotiated solution. Ukraine agreed, among other things, to a 30-day ceasefire. In return, the US promised to resume suspended weapon deliveries and provide satellite imagery data.

According to Kremlin Spokesman Dmitri Peskov, the meeting took place late in the evening. Peskov did not provide information on the content of the discussion, but the Kremlin described the outcome as “cautiously optimistic”.

Peskov also stated that Putin had handed over information to President Trump through Witkoff, with a potential direct meeting between Putin and Trump to be decided at a later time.

Witkoff arrived in Moscow earlier in the day. Putin, in a joint press conference with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, expressed general support for the idea of a ceasefire, but emphasized that details still needed to be discussed.
