The US has apparently halted and scaled back planning for offensive cyber operations against Russia, a move that a senior US official has described as a “serious blow” to national security.
According to the official, as cited by CNN, the pause in offensive cyber operations against Russia could make the US more vulnerable to potential cyber attacks from Moscow, which has the capability to disrupt critical US infrastructure and gather sensitive information. This could potentially be used for election interference, the official warned.
The US government, under the presidency of Donald Trump, had recently sought to engage in a dialogue with Russia and three years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the US president harshly attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a White House press conference.
