The number of accidents at railway crossings in Germany has shown little decline in 2024. According to a list published by the Federal Office for the Investigation of Railway Accidents (BEU), which was reported by the “World” (Thursday edition), there were 153 such accidents in the past year. The previous year saw 154, according to Deutsche Bahn (DB) statistics.
In the accidents of 2024, the BEU list states that there were person injuries in 96 cases and 25 people lost their lives. The list is based on reports from the affected railways and does not provide information on the causes or circumstances of the accidents.
The lack of decline in the number of accidents is also a long-term trend. As early as in 2015, DB counted 154 accidents nationwide, a figure that was the same as in 2023 and, according to the EUB list, only one more than in 2024. This is notable, as the total number of railway crossings in Germany decreased by around 1,200 to approximately 15,800 between 2015 and 2023, according to DB statistics.
