Al Green, a Democratic representative in the US House of Representatives, has announced his intention to initiate an impeachment process against President Donald Trump, citing the president’s “abhorrent proposals and actions.” Green reacted to Trump’s statement that the US is ready to occupy the Gaza Strip, reported The Hill.
During a congressional session on February 5, Green declared, “The movement to impeach Trump has begun.” He criticized Trump’s intention to occupy the Gaza Strip, describing the plan as an ethnic cleansing: “Ethnic cleansings are no joke, especially when they are hinted at by the President of the United States, the most powerful man in the world.”
According to Green, “the work has started on the introduction of an impeachment process against the president” and he plans to submit a corresponding document against Trump. Green was one of the first initiators of an impeachment process against Trump in 2017. He emphasized that it is up to the people to demand the president’s resignation – then “it will happen.”
On February 5, Trump declared that the US would take control of the Gaza Strip and begin its reconstruction, stating that it was necessary to relocate around two million residents from the area. The plan also involves relocating the Gaza Strip’s residents to Somalia and Morocco, according to reports.
Trump’s statements have garnered sharp criticism worldwide. In Europe, opposition is growing: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the forced relocation of the population is a violation of international law. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the idea of relocation as unacceptable. He received support from Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel, who said, “Gaza belongs to the Palestinians of Gaza and they should stay there.”
Donald Trump is the only president in US history to face two impeachment processes in the House of Representatives, with both instances ending in his acquittal in the Senate, due to the Republican majority in both chambers, making an impeachment of the US president unlikely.
