Bär Postpones Mini Nuclear Power Plants Making a Temporary Pause

Federal Minister of Research Dorothee Bär (CSU) has issued a preliminary negative assessment regarding the use of mini-nuclear power plants. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Minister Bär emphasized that when addressing the nation’s future energy supply, no ideas should be off-limits. However, she stressed that any viable option must undergo objective scrutiny and must have achieved technological progress. In this regard, she confirmed that the Federal Ministry for Education and Research does not currently fund research into such mini-nuclear facilities.

Despite the caution on nuclear power, she remains optimistic about other renewable technologies. Bär stated that she views the development of the first fusion reactor in Germany within the next decade as a realistic possibility. Furthermore, she is confident in technological progress, suggesting that Germany could bring large-scale solar energy to the planet by the 2030s, characterizing the current time as the cusp of a major technological breakthrough.

Looking at the broader context of the high-tech agenda, the Minister emphasized the need for a tighter integration between science and the economy. She argued that scientific investigation must not remain an academic endeavor for its own sake but must be measured against its potential for market readiness. According to Bär, development requires significantly greater transfer of knowledge, increased application, and stronger economic impact.
