Witches' Night Kicks Off With Minor Mayhem Confrontations In Berlin

The night celebrated as Walpurgis Night in Berlin began with minor scuffles involving the police. Several thousand left-wing demonstrators marched through the districts of Neukölln and Kreuzberg under the theme “Take back the Night”. During the demonstration, participants chanted slogans such as “Too many individual cases” and directed insults toward the police force.

The events escalated when pyrotechnics were set off, leading to physical altercations. According to a dts reporter, at least one woman wearing a specific protest-identified scarf was temporarily detained by the police. Although the march management declared the procession concluded shortly before the planned end, the majority of participants dispersed quickly and peacefully afterward.

The clashes between left-wing demonstrators and the police are a recurring tradition in Berlin, with confrontations historically occurring on the night of May 1st and again on the evening of May 1st. However, the source notes that overall levels of violence in recent years have generally shown a marked decline.
