Sepp Müller, the Vice Chairman of the unions’ parliamentary group, has stated support for gradually raising the retirement age to 70. Speaking to RTL and ntv, he affirmed that while he is not yet aware of the pension commission’s findings, he believes the proposal for a higher working age is beneficial. He argued that fairness requires the younger generation, who are projected to work until 70 in the 2050s, to contribute, while simultaneously allowing the current generation, who began working at age 16, to enjoy a well-deserved retirement after 45 years. Müller emphasized that the immediate focus must be on stabilizing the pension level and ensuring that the current generation will actually be able to receive a pension. To that end, he concluded that it would be prudent and necessary to translate the commission’s results directly into binding legislation.
