The Green parliamentary group intends to introduce legislation into the Bundestag this week to suspend the proposed increases in parliamentary salaries. According to Irene Mihalic, the party’s first parliamentary managing director, the Greens announced to the “Handelsblatt” that they would first submit their own initiative concerning the suspension of the salary hike until the coalition provides more concrete information.
This development follows the CDU’s parliamentary group leader, Jens Spahn, who had publicly stated for the first time this year that he supported pausing the salary increases. Mihalic noted that while negotiations within the CDU/CSU governing coalition are still in progress, it was positive that Spahn had clarified his position, thereby paving the way for a suspension.
The Greens confirmed they are prepared to submit such an initiative jointly with the governing coalition. However, Mihalic clarified that although they have repeatedly offered this proposal to the coalition in recent weeks, since no official draft bill has been provided to them, they decided it was necessary to present their own standalone law initially. The current plan dictates that the monthly salaries for the 630 parliament members are set to rise from 497 euros to approximately 12,330 euros starting July 1st.
