Alexander Throm, the interior political spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has criticized the calls from several state interior ministers advocating for preparation in the event that the AfD becomes part of a government in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to the Funke media group, Throm dismissed the suggestions, stating, “I find no use in such public discussions. Instead, we must work every day to ensure that this scenario does not happen”.
The discussion is prompted by the fact that the AfD reportedly could emerge as the strongest political force during the state election in Saxony-Anhalt scheduled for September. Over the weekend, multiple state interior ministers publicly recommended preparing themselves for this potential political change. Their underlying argument is that granting the AfD access to security-relevant information poses a significant security risk.
