German Armed Forces Soldier Count Increases Gradually

The German Ministry of Defense reported that the overall number of soldiers in the Bundeswehr has increased, albeit in relatively small increments. As of April, the total number reached approximately 185,900 personnel, marking a growth of over 3,400 soldiers compared to the same time last year.

While the total force size only climbed by about 500 soldiers compared to the preceding month of March, the ministry characterized this as a “positive development”. It noted that seasonal fluctuations commonly observed in the first quarter of the year were not negatively impacting the ongoing overall positive growth trend.

Recruitment efforts show strong improvements: by April 30, there were roughly 28,800 applications, representing a 21 percent jump compared to the previous year. Furthermore, around 9,500 new appointments were made during the month, an 11 percent increase year-on-year. Support for the military also continues to grow; the ministry stated that about 13,100 individuals are currently serving as voluntary or short-term professional soldiers-a 9 percent rise from last year and an increase of about 400 people compared to March.

Looking ahead, the Bundeswehr has set a strategic objective to increase its total manpower to approximately 203,000 soldiers by 2031. This planned increase includes aiming for around 186,000 full-time professional soldiers.
