CSU Leader Open to Across-the-Board Subsidy Cuts for Bavarian Government Savings

Klaus Holetschek, the chairman of the CSU faction in the Bavarian State Parliament, indicated openness to implementing broad cuts to subsidies. Speaking on Politico’s Berlin Playbook Podcast on Monday, Holetschek acknowledged that there were varied opinions on such matters, stating, “It is certainly an idea that can be considered to approach subsidies via blanket reductions”.

He also affirmed that the coalition requires major reforms. “We are now dealing with large social reforms; they must come, and we all have to contribute” he stressed.

Despite the strained budget situation, Holetschek explicitly defended the Maternity Pension. “I believe it is a matter of showing respect for mothers’ contributions” he noted.

Regarding specific cutbacks, however, he remained reserved, suggesting they wait to see what is proposed in the upcoming tax reform concept.
