The United States and South Korea have begun joint military exercises, which are being considered the largest in recent years.
It is expected that military power will be shown and tensions will increase even more with North Korea, which has been making more and more aggressive moves in recent months.
The military exercises are being called Ulchi Freedom Shield, and are being interpreted as a signal to the ally that they are determined to continue major military exercises, after they were postponed indefinitely to make room for the nuclear weapons deal with North Korea or because of COVID-19.
Details of the operation have not been released, but earlier military exercises involved tens of thousands of soldiers and a large number of planes, warships and tanks.
In the joint statement of the two armies, it is stated that the exercises are in response to numerous missile tests by the neighboring country – North Korea.
The exercise will simulate joint attacks, the delivery of aid, weapons and derivatives to the most engaged units, as well as demonstrate the massive destruction of weapons.
The 2019 drills were postponed after Donald Trump’s first summit with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.
This move by Trump was seen as an attempt to convince Kim to give up his nuclear weapons program and follow the diplomatic path.
