Firefighters in France are “battling a monster fire”.
More than 1,000 firefighters are battling a “monster” blaze in southwestern France that has already destroyed nearly 7,000 hectares of forest, officials say.
The raging fire near the city of Bordeaux has destroyed a number of homes and forced 10,000 residents to evacuate.
“It’s like a monster,” said fire representative Gregory Allione. As stated further, strong winds and high temperatures are making the firefighting operation difficult.
Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron announced that Austria, Germany, Greece, Poland and Romania “are coming to help” France in fighting the flames.
This summer France and a number of other European countries have seen a wave of deadly fires, fueled by record temperatures and droughts across the continent.
As a result, more than 1,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat in Portugal and Spain.
In the UK, an extreme heat warning is already in place, with temperatures forecast to reach 37C (99F) in some areas over the next four days.
The heat wave is sure to affect health, transport and working conditions, authorities warn.
