Russian is sentenced to 7 years in prison.
A Moscow court sentenced an opposition councilor to seven years in prison for criticizing the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
It is the first such sentence imposed under the draconian new law, which bans any public criticism of Putin’s attack on Ukraine.
Alexei Gorinov, a councilor in Moscow’s Krasnoselsky district and also a lawyer, was arrested in April on charges of “knowingly spreading false information” about the Russian military.
We recall that during the council meeting, together with another opposition councillor, Elena Kotenochkina, he opposed the council’s proposal to hold a children’s drawing competition and dance festival despite the war in Ukraine.
“Children are dying in Ukraine,” said Gorinov, adding that “I believe that all efforts of Russian civil society should be focused exclusively on stopping the war and returning the Russian army from the territory of Ukraine.”
