The IMF suspends Russia’s “role of honor”.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has suspended an honorary role given to the longest-serving member of the lending body because he is Russian.
Alexei Mozhin, executive director for Russia at the global lending body, has held the honorary role since 2015.
An IMF spokesman said he had temporarily suspended Mozhin “given Russia’s role in the ongoing war in Ukraine” and its potential impact on the job.
It comes after pressure from other stakeholders, including the US, UK and Canada.
He also had the role of managing director, who chairs the executive board of the IMF.
Several IMF members found it unacceptable for Mozhin to continue his duties on behalf of the board.
By suspending him from the position the board will not announce a successor. The issue of whether to end the suspension will be decided before the end of the year.
