Can the Economy Really Rebound?

German Economic Associations Urge a Change of Direction for the Economy after the Federal Election.

“The current economic development in almost all sectors is dramatic” states a joint declaration from 19 associations, published on Monday.

Investments have been lacking, and almost daily, companies in and outside of Germany are making decisions against the location of Germany. “Our country is becoming less attractive and losing more jobs.” The “rescue of the German economy through better framework conditions” must therefore take center stage in the election campaign.

The parties must present concepts that make Germany a growth country and an attractive investment location again. “The federal election must become an economic election, we need an economic turnaround – now” the associations say.

Among the demands of the signatories, including Gesamtmetall, BGA, and HDE, are, for example, a stronger reduction of bureaucracy, corporate and employee tax cuts, a return to the upper limit of social contributions of 40%, and a “comprehensive flexibilization of labor law”.
