CDU Politician Patricia Lips to Be Nominated as Top Candidate for Hesse in 2025 German Federal Election
According to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” under reference to regional party circles, CDU politician Patricia Lips is set to be nominated as the top candidate for the CDU in Hesse for the 2025 German federal election. The party’s leadership, led by Hesse’s Minister President Boris Rhein, reportedly plans to propose Lips at the list formation meeting on Thursday.
Lips, a member of the Bundestag since 2002, is close to CDU Federal Chairman and Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz. She supported Merz in his 2020 bid for the party’s chairmanship, serving as the leader of his campaign team. As a Bundestag member, Lips has been responsible for financial and European policy, and since 2021, she has served as the deputy chair of the CDU/CSU Bundestag faction, focusing on European policy.
In the 2021 Hesse CDU primary, former Chancellor’s Office Chief Helge Braun ran for the top spot, but did not re-run. Lips was second on the list at the time. The CDU in Hesse is said to be keen on nominating a woman as the top candidate, as only a few women are running in the electoral districts. The Hesse CDU is following the lead of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU, which previously nominated a woman, Ex-Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner, as its top candidate.
