After the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, the European Union is re-establishing direct contact with the new leadership of the country. The EU has sent its special envoy for Syria to Damascus, said EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas on Monday before an EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
The meeting will discuss how to engage with the new leadership in Syria and at what level to enter into dialogue. “And of course, what further steps we are prepared to take.” If we see that Syria is moving in the right direction, the country will face a “optimistic, positive future”, Kallas said.
For the EU, it’s not just about words, but about seeing that the actions of the new leadership in Syria are “moving in the right direction”. The coming weeks and months will show this. “Then we’ll also be open to discussing the next steps”, the EU Foreign Policy Chief said.
