Irene Mihalic, the parliamentary business manager of the Green Bundestag faction, advises her faction’s members to abstain from voting on the confidence vote for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). “We recommend our members abstain from the vote on the confidence question” she told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Monday editions).
“This is because for a new election of the German Bundestag to take place, the confidence question must fail. With our abstention, we can ensure this and thus enable new elections.”
Mihalic added that after the FDP’s exit from the coalition, the government no longer has an independent majority in parliament. Therefore, it is right to hold early elections, allowing citizens to decide on the future direction of the country.
However, she acknowledged that until the election, “we will be fully responsible and will not vote against this government” but will instead seek majorities in parliament for laws that are “important for the citizens.
