French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed centrist politician François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister. The Élysée Palace announced this on Friday.

The predecessor, Michel Barnier, was last ousted by a no-confidence vote after just under three months due to a dispute over a budget cut. Since the advance elections in June, Macron’s camp no longer has a majority in the National Assembly. Bayrou is the leader of the Macron-affiliated Modern Party, which is positioned in the political center.

Initially, Macron wanted to decide on a Barnier successor on Thursday, setting a deadline for himself during talks with representatives of several parties. However, he extended the decision and shifted the choice to another day.
