Over half of Germans (55 percent) still buy their Christmas tree in a stationary store, as a survey by the IT industry association Bitkom, published on Thursday, shows.
Only two percent plan to buy their Christmas tree online this year, and for three quarters, the idea of buying a tree online is not even an option (73 percent). A fifth prefer to make an experience out of it and cut one themselves (19 percent). Seven percent opt for a plastic tree instead, and 16 percent have decided not to have any Christmas green at all.
In the past, two percent of respondents have ordered a real Christmas tree online multiple times, seven percent at least once, and 16 percent can at least imagine doing so in the future.
Bitkom Research phoned 1,004 people aged 16 and over in Germany for the survey, which was conducted from the 43rd to the 46th calendar week of 2024.
