Food Frenzy: Global Farm Prices Soar to Record Highs!

Agricultural product producer prices rose by 3..0% in October 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday.

In contrast to the previous months of September (-0.2%) and August (-2.5%), the change in prices for agricultural products was positive in October, with a 1.8% increase compared to the previous month.

Prices for plant-based products, such as fruits and vegetables, continued to decline, with a 4.6% decrease compared to the same period last year. In contrast, prices for animal-based products, such as meat and dairy, rose by 8.1% over the same period.

The decline in prices for plant-based products, such as potatoes, was mainly due to a 38.3% drop in prices for table potatoes compared to the same period last year. In September, the year-on-year change was -41.2%.

Fresh fruit prices rose by 21.1% over the same period last year, with a 29.6% increase in apple prices. Vegetable prices, on the other hand, fell by 0.8%, with a 7.1% drop in ice salad and a 2.7% drop in mushrooms.

Sunflower seeds, on the other hand, rose by 52.3% and tomatoes by 23.2%.

Grain prices fell by 4.1% over the same period last year, while prices for animal feed fell by 14.7%. Rapeseed, on the other hand, rose by 16.3% over the same period last year, and wine by 0.6%.

The increase in prices for animal-based products, such as milk, was mainly due to a 22.2% rise in milk prices over the same period last year. Milk prices rose by 4.3% in October compared to the previous month, while egg prices fell by 1.6% over the same period last year.

Prices for animals, such as pigs and cattle, fell by 0.4% over the same period last year, with a 7.4% drop in pig prices and a 14.6% rise in cattle prices. Chicken prices, on the other hand, rose by 4.2% over the same period last year.
