Federal Criminal Police Warn of Violent Online Scene Targeting Minors and Vulnerable Individuals
The German Federal Criminal Police (BKA) is warning of a particularly violent online scene that specifically targets minors and psychologically vulnerable individuals. According to the “Spiegel”, the group in question is active on the popular gaming app Discord and the online platform Telegram.
Members of the group reportedly extort their victims, forcing them to send nude images and self-harm, such as using Ritz crackers to make cuts on their bodies. In extreme cases, they even encourage their victims to take their own lives.
“Online communities that specifically target minors and encourage self-harm and criminal activities can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable children and adolescents” a BKA spokesperson said to the news magazine.
The BKA advises parents to be aware of warning signs.
The authorities are urging children and adolescents to be cautious when making new online friends and not to give away personal data easily.
The BKA has also published a warning notice on its website about “Dangerous Chat Groups”.
Discord denies not doing enough to combat the chat groups, stating that they are constantly improving their measures and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
Telegram did not respond to a request from the news magazine.
