The German Actress Who Rejected Hollywood's Golden Lure

Uschi Glas never had a desire to switch to Hollywood, according to her own statements. In fact, there was an opportunity, but it would have conflicted with her wish for a family, the actress told the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

At that time, she had already filmed in Italy, France, and Spain, and the next step would have been Hollywood – but she would have “absolutely started from zero”. “And probably you’d have to polish toenails for years and then maybe play a concentration camp guard” Glas said, and she had “absolutely no desire” for that.

Her first leading role was in the 1966 film “Winnetou and the Half-Blood Apanatschi”. “I was invited to Berlin for auditions and on the corridor, there were all these girls who looked like me. I got the part and we went to former Yugoslavia” the actress said.

Her breakthrough came with the film “To the Point, Darling”, for which she refused to undress despite corresponding demands. It led to discussions, Glas said: “I would have had a nice figure and everyone would have undressed, that’s freedom. I went to my costume designer and said I’d rather have a sexy corsage. And then she made one, and at the end, the dress fell and there was just the white corsage underneath.”

Despite her success, she always wanted to stay grounded: “Don’t let yourself be seduced by any excesses. I’ve gotten used to giving myself an account and, in the evening, looking in the mirror and asking myself if the day went well” the 80-year-old said. “And it was always important to me to live a normal life.
