Union’s Chancellor candidate has the best chances to lead the next federal government, according to polls. According to a Forsa survey for the “Stern” and RTL Germany, 66% of Germans think that Friedrich Merz leaves the citizens in the dark about many of his ideas. Only 24% have the impression that he openly says what policy he would pursue in the chancellery. 10% do not express an opinion. Even 55% of CDU and CSU voters say that their own candidate leaves the citizens in the dark about many of his ideas. The results are even more pronounced among SPD (83%), Green (71%), AfD (76%), and BSW (83%) supporters. Only FDP voters are more divided, with 47% thinking Merz is specific enough and 46% to the contrary. The survey, conducted by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for the “Stern” and RTL Germany, questioned a total of 1,006 people on December 5 and 6, 2024.
