The Dark Side of a Part-Time Revolution?

According to a response by Education Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) to a question from the state parliament’s SPD faction, as reported by the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition), as of November 11, 2024, a total of 80,697 teachers worked part-time at public schools in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

Of these, 45,678 cases were due to family part-time work and 4,965 due to parental leave. There were 11,850 teachers in “unconditional part-time” and, in addition, 3,849 in “unconditional part-time in the block model.” Early part-time retirement was found in 49 cases, and the remaining 14,306 cases fell under “other part-time reasons”.

“The personnel situation at our schools remains a clear weak point of this state government,” said SPD’s education expert, Dilek Engin.
