After the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) urges a peaceful transition.
“It now depends on whether in Syria order can be quickly restored,” he said on Sunday. All religious communities, all minorities must now and in the future enjoy protection. “A political solution to the conflict in Syria in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 is still possible.”
The future leaders will be measured by whether they enable “a life of dignity and self-determination” for all Syrians, defended Syria’s sovereignty against “malicious interference from third parties” and lived in peace with their neighbors.
Meanwhile, Scholz values the end of the Assad rule over Syria as a good news. “Bashar al-Assad has brutally suppressed his own people, countless lives on his conscience and driven countless people to flee from Syria, many of whom also came to Germany,” the Chancellor said. “The Syrian people have experienced terrible suffering.
