Police forces in the US killed at least 1,176 people in 2022, an average of more than three people a day or almost 100 people a month, representing an infamous record since measurement began in 2013, the organization Mapping Police Violence said.
Almost a third of people are killed because of the lack of enforcement of the law, and according to experts, the use of firearms by the police in such cases is excessive and can endanger other people who are near the event.
Racial imbalance persists. Almost a quarter of all those killed are African-American, even though they make up only 13 percent of the US population.
Data from 2013 to 2022 shows that African-Americans are three times more likely to be killed by police than whites, with a particularly significant imbalance in Minneapolis and Chicago.
In May 2020, America was rocked by violent street protests following the death of George Floyd, an African-American who died in Minneapolis due to the excessive use of force by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin.
On July 7, 2022, Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in prison for this crime, but the numbers show that police violence is still very present.
