CDU Economic Council Demands Unified European AI Strategy from German Government

The CDU Economic Council has urged Federal Minister for Research, Dorothee Bär (CSU), to enhance European coordination efforts regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the Economic Council, Wolfgang Steiger, stressed the need for national strategies to be more closely aligned with the European Commission’s ‘Apply-AI’ strategy. According to this plan, the goal is to accelerate the use of AI across key industries and within the public sector.

Steiger argued that merely studying AI is insufficient; rather, it must be viewed as a “central lever for economic transformation”. He outlined that building a robust, digital single market strong enough to sustain Europe as an independent technology and innovation hub requires common innovation ecosystems, pooled resources, and the elimination of redundant structures.

Currently, the national focus on this issue is marked by the “High-Tech Agenda” which is scheduled to be a cabinet topic this Wednesday. During a separate press conference, Minister Bär (CSU) is expected to present the associated roadmaps.
