The Green Party is demanding that the federal government revise its climate protection program, citing the latest report from the Expert Council for Climate Issues as a severe indictment of the ruling coalition. Julia Verlinden, the Greens’ Deputy Parliamentary Group Chair, told the “Rheinische Post” that the coalition is heading toward a legislative breach that will be costly for humanity and the environment. She pointed to recent weeks, noting how expensive dependency on gas and oil sources has proven to be.
The advisory body had previously concluded that the federal government’s climate protection efforts are insufficient to meet the 2030 climate goals. Verlinden criticized this by arguing that the government’s actions remain alarming, even before the council’s report ink has dried. She criticized the coalition for proceeding with the deeply flawed building modernization law and the law authorizing new fossil gas power plants, effectively creating further “climate bombs”. She urged the coalition parties to take the Expert Council’s warnings seriously, immediately halt their anti-climate legislation, and overhaul the entire climate protection policy.
The Left Party also voiced strong criticism regarding the center-right/center-left coalition’s climate policy. Fabian Fahl, the Left’s climate policy spokesperson, argued that the government has failed to present a climate protection program that respects planetary boundaries, failing to adequately acknowledge the severe physical reality. Fahl stressed that genuine climate policy must accelerate the socio-ecological transformation while ensuring citizens are included-for instance, through a proper climate dividend.
