Dead Bowhead Whale Off Anholt Island Identified By Tracking Tag

The Danish environmental authority has confirmed that the recently discovered stranded bowhead whale off Anholt Island is the same individual that has been sighted multiple times previously in the Baltic Sea. According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, the whale’s identity was confirmed through a transmitter fitted on its back. This animal was initially released into the Skagerrak in May after private investors covered the costs associated with transporting it from the Baltic Sea into the North Sea. The whale was first spotted in the Little Belt, approximately 75 meters from the coast of Anholt, starting last Thursday. While the Danish environmental authority had initially questioned the whale’s identity, it has since clarified that the animal is indeed the known individual.
