SoVD und Opposition warnen vor Elterngeldkürzungen für Familien Sicherheit verlangen

Opposition groups and social welfare associations are sounding the alarm over potential cuts to the parental allowance. According to Michaela Engelmeier, the managing board chair of the German Social Welfare Association (SoVD), families require stability and financial security, not discussions of reductions, especially given falling birthrates and limited childcare facilities. She argues that any effort to strengthen families must preserve one of the most vital family policies, warning that families are already under tremendous pressure due to high living costs, and the parental allowance itself has continuously lost real value since its implementation.

The criticism was echoed by Mandy Eißing, a member of parliament for The Left party. She strongly criticized the government’s plans, pointing out that the coalition agreement had promised increases to both the minimum and maximum rates of the parental allowance. She asserts that proposing cuts now constitutes a broken promise, even though families are struggling and the birth rate is dropping.

These concerns arise because the Federal Family Minister, Karin Prien (CDU), is required to save 500 million Euros in her budget. The cabinet’s decision regarding the federal budget stipulates that Prien must reform the parental allowance in order to reduce departmental spending.
