Starmer Under Pressure As Health Minister Steps Down

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure as Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced his resignation on Thursday. Streeting indicated that he intends to consider a run for the leadership of the Labour Party. In a letter addressed to Starmer, Streeting acknowledged that improvements in the performance of the National Health Service (NHS) would have been “all good reasons” for him to remain in his current role, but stated that he had lost confidence in Starmer’s leadership. Specifically, he wrote: “It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next parliamentary election and that Labour MPs and unions want the debate over how to proceed to be a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factional squabbles”. Although it is widely expected that Streeting plans to challenge Starmer for the Labour top job, he did not announce a formal bid in his letter. Instead, he cited the “unprecedented” results of last week’s local elections, the government’s poor approval ratings, and political errors as the reasons for his departure.
