CDU and SPD politicians are urging the federal government to halt its public disagreements. In an unusual show of solidarity, Dennis Radtke, the chairman of the CDA’s employee wing, and Esra Limbacher, the spokesperson for the conservative Seeheimer Circle within the SPD, appeal directly to the coalition leaders.
Speaking to the “Spiegel”, Radtke reportedly demanded that the coalition “finally get moving, pull yourselves together, and focus on what truly matters: How do we achieve growth, and how do we do it without jeopardizing social peace in the country?”
Limbacher echoed the calls for determination, referencing former Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s motto: “What counts is the result”. He argued that all leading figures within the government must now unite, end the public conflict, and get to work. The country requires large-scale changes, and both the CDU and SPD have a collective responsibility to deliver.
Tensions within the coalition have been escalating since Easter. Ministers have accused one another of mishandling reactions to the energy price crisis and the struggling economic development. Limbacher noted that, “At the moment, the loudest and shrillest voices within our respective parties are dictating the public perception of the coalition”. He suggested that some are attempting to “sabotage the political center”. Conversely, he argued that the sensible voices within the SPD and the CDU must resist this pressure and raise their own voices.
