Klingbeil stelt Mitbestimmung und Gewerkschaften als Schlüssel für Deutschlands Stärke dar

At the DGB National Congress in Berlin, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) emphasized the crucial role of employee co-determination and unions in stabilizing the current political landscape. He argued that in times of considerable challenges, maintaining unity among political groups, unions, and employers is essential to keeping Germany “strong and resilient”. Klingbeil drew attention to the prominent role that recently Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has given to co-determination, suggesting that Germany should take this as an example.

Addressing the economic struggles facing Germany, Klingbeil pointed out that the country has not experienced notable growth for four years. He cited energy price shocks and the war in Iran as additional factors dampening economic performance. To secure Germany’s economic strength, he reaffirmed the urgent necessity of investments in infrastructure, digital expansion, and climate protection. Furthermore, he advocated for stronger regulation of digital platforms and a move toward a fairer tax system.

Finally, Klingbeil underscored the importance of enacting reforms aimed at generating growth and creating jobs, ensuring that these changes are implemented justly. He called for income tax reforms that require top earners to assume greater responsibility, and announced an action plan designed to combat tax fraud and financial crime. Throughout his speech, Klingbeil urged that the political debate be conducted in a way that prevents “division and hate” from taking root.
