Union Berlin defeated FSV Mainz 05 with a score of 3-1, concluding the 33rd matchday of the German Bundesliga. Although the stakes were relatively low for both sides during the penultimate round, it was a significant victory for Marie-Louise Eta, who secured her first win as a head coach of a Bundesliga team.
The match began positively for Union, who took the lead in the 38th minute. Andrej Ilić netted the opener with a header, following a short corner delivered by Trimmel and Burcu, striking the far post. The Berlin side played actively for much of the first half and earned their initial lead.
However, Mainz quickly answered back after the break. In the 48th minute, Sheraldo Becker equalized, utilizing a precise cross from Nebel to score from close range, tying the game at 1-1. As the game wore on, Union pushed for the decisive goal, and their efforts paid off dramatically. Oliver Burke scored the crucial winner in the 88th minute, followed by a third goal from Josip Juranović just three minutes later.
The fixture was marked by numerous interruptions, notably tennis balls thrown onto the pitch by Union supporters who were protesting the frequency of Sunday fixtures. By the end, the arrival of bad weather also caused many spectators to leave the stadium early.
