RB Leipzig has secured a potential return to the Champions League next season. Following Matchday 33 and a 2:1 victory over St. Pauli, the club has cemented at least fourth place in the Bundesliga standings, though they are currently sitting in third.
Despite the positive result, Leipzig struggled significantly during the first half, allowing St. Pauli to put on a surprisingly strong performance. Had the visiting side maintained this form throughout the season, they would not be in the penultimate spot. St. Pauli had some bad luck in the first half, only witnessing Kaars hit the woodwork. However, Xaver Schlager eventually lifted the team’s spirits, scoring the opener in stoppage time of the first half with a powerful shot that found the net.
The second half saw RB Leipzig pressing their attacking advantage. Willi Orban increased the lead to 2:0 in the 54th minute following a corner kick. Leipzig maintained their dominance, limiting St. Pauli’s space for attacks (a third Leipzig goal was disallowed due to an offside call). The game remained tense until near the end, when St. Pauli’s Abdoulie Ceesay managed to connect with a shot, drawing level in the 86th minute.
Despite the defeat, St. Pauli remains in the penultimate standing, meaning they must fight the relegation battle against Wolfsburg in the final matchday.
Other results from Saturday afternoon included Stuttgart beating Leverkusen 3:1, Hoffenheim defeating Bremen 1-0, and Augsburg defeating Mönchengladbach 3:1. In the evening fixtures, massively relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg faced the already crowned champions, FC Bayern Munich.
