AfD Leads Union in Insa Survey Ahead of Major Political Shift

According to the latest “Sunday Trend” poll published by the Insa Institute, the AfD is now leading the Union by five percentage points for the first time. The poll placed the AfD at 28 percent, while the CDU and CSU saw a one-point drop to 23 percent. This decline marks the weakest result for the Union in over four years.

The SPD also recorded a decline of one percentage point, settling at 13 percent. This means that the combined vote share for the Union and the SPD now totals only 36 percent. The Greens also achieved 13 percent. Meanwhile, the Linke retained its support at 11 percent, while the BSW and FDP maintained their values at 3 percent each.

Insa data revealed that over the period since the federal election in February 2025, the two coalition partners have collectively lost nearly one-fifth of their previous voters. Hermann Binkert, head of the research institute, told “Bild am Sonntag” that if this trend continues, “Germany faces a massive shift in the political balance of power”.

The polling institute surveyed 1,200 individuals between May 4th and May 8th, 2026.
