Nvidia Fuels Gains Nasdaq Hits High While Dow Holds Strong

US stock markets saw gains on Friday. At the close in New York, the Dow was calculated at 49,609 points, representing a small gain compared to the previous day’s closing. Meanwhile, the broader S&P 500 traded higher, reaching approximately 7,399 points with a gain of 0.8 percent. The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 was calculated at around 29,235 points, up by 2.4 percent.

Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, commented on the positive trends, citing the recent US labor report. He noted that the US economy had created 115,000 jobs outside of agriculture in April, significantly exceeding the 65,000 anticipated by the market. Furthermore, hourly wages rose by 0.2 percent, which was lower than the expected 0.3 percent. He suggested that this data helps to mitigate a potential stagflationary scenario in the US and restores confidence among investors regarding the economic outlook.

However, Lipkow cautioned that the overall labor market indicators reported this week present a very ambiguous picture. He emphasized that it remains to be seen whether the US economy will continue to remain robust, or if increased inflation expectations and resulting consumer spending cuts will impact the labor market and, subsequently, the future operating results of corporations.

In other markets, the European common currency showed some strength by late Friday. The Euro exchanged for 1.1764 US dollars, meaning a dollar could be bought for 0.8501 Euros. Commodities also reacted notably. The price of gold increased significantly, reaching $4,743 per fine ounce ($129.62 per gram), marking a 1.1 percent rise by evening trading. Oil prices climbed as well; the price for a barrel of North Sea Brent crude at 100,60 US dollars at Friday evening approached 100,60 US dollars, an increase of 0.6 percent, or 55 cents, from the previous close.
