CDU Rejects Cuts to Healthcare for Citizens on Bürgergeld

The worker wing of the CDU has decisively rejected calls originating from within its own ranks that advocate for cutting healthcare services for recipients of social benefits. Speaking to the “Handelsblatt”, CDU chairman Dennis Radtke stressed that necessary medical assistance must be available to everyone, “regardless of whether they are working, are a single parent, receiving basic pension security, or are dependent on support for any other reason”.

For the Christian Democratic Association’s working class, this issue represents a non-negotiable red line, according to Radtke. He explicitly stated that no savings should be made from the essential medical care provided to vulnerable people.

The controversy arose this week when representatives from the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group’s Young Group demanded benefit reductions aimed at stabilizing the social contributions paid into the statutory health insurance (GKV) system. Instead, Radtke insisted that the twelve billion euros currently paid through GKV contributions must be covered by general tax revenues. He argued that achieving this would require the Finance Minister and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil to present a proposal and establish a binding agreement.

Radtke emphasized that any such restructuring plan could certainly not begin by targeting the most vulnerable segments of society. He warned that cost areas such as a single mother caring for a sick child, or a pensioner on basic income, are not expenditures that can simply be trimmed away.
