Bavarian Minister Warns of Possible Attacks by Iranian Intelligence

Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann (CSU), warned that Germany faces potential attacks from individuals loyal to the Iranian regime. Speaking to the TV station “Welt” on Friday, Herrmann stated that German authorities must assume that Iranian intelligence services, in whatever form, are engaging people staying in Germany who are capable of committing serious crimes and possibly carrying out attacks.

According to the minister, these perpetrators could target individuals of Iranian descent who are known opponents of the Tehran regime, but they could also threaten Jewish institutions. Herrmann drew attention to the attack on the Israeli restaurant Eclipse in Munich in April, citing this incident as concrete evidence of suspicion pointing toward Iranian-descent perpetrators. While acknowledging that as of now he has no concrete information about planned attacks, he stressed that the risk remains significant.

Herrmann’s comments come against the backdrop of a report published by the New York Times, which suggests disagreements within the German government and intelligence services over the assessment of the danger level. The report claimed that both Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had publicly raised the alarm about threats, though characterizing the severity of those threats as largely hypothetical.
