German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) announced a new negotiating initiative for Europe concerning the war in Ukraine. According to Wadephul’s statements to “Welt am Sonntag” he emphasized that Europe is prepared to take on greater responsibility and is currently in discussions with both the United States and Ukraine. He explained that Europeans, utilizing an E3 format with France and the United Kingdom, aim to relaunch peace talks, which would grant Europe a significantly expanded role over the coming weeks and months. This proposed pivot is partly necessitated by the current geopolitical landscape, as the United States is primarily focusing its attention on the situation involving Iran. As such, the European nations plan to step up their involvement and fill a stronger role in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
