Schweitzer Elected New SPD Parliamentary Group Leader in Rhineland Palatinate

Outgoing Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer has been elected chair of the SPD parliamentary group in Rhineland-Palatinate. The party announced this on Wednesday. Schweitzer previously held this position from 2014 to 2021. However, the political landscape in Rhineland-Palatinate has changed following the state election held in March. While he led the largest governing faction at that time, he now heads the smaller of the two major governing parties. Following the recent state election, the CDU has taken the lead in the state government for the first time in 35 years. The coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD has already been signed and is set to be formally signed on Wednesday. Gordon Schneider of the CDU is slated to be elected Minister-President on May 18.
