Germany and Portugal Aim to Deepen Economic Ties

Speaking during a meeting in Berlin with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, German political leader Friedrich Merz emphasized the commitment to deepening economic cooperation between the two countries. Merz stated that a key focus of the discussions was strengthening economic ties between Germany and Portugal.

He noted that the specialized expertise Germany holds in the IT sector is particularly sought after in Portugal. During a joint press conference, Merz added that his two ministers for digitalization and state modernization are engaged in close dialogue and are already working on specific projects aimed at furthering the digitalization of both nations. Furthermore, Merz identified “great opportunities” stemming from potential collaboration between the airline Lufthansa and the Portuguese carrier TAP.

Prime Minister Montenegro reinforced the message, asserting that German companies play a vital role in supporting the Portuguese economy. He cited the projected 150 percent increase in Portugal’s technological exports by 2025 as proof of the deep and strong nature of their economic relationship. Both leaders underscored the general goal of expanding trade with other nations through the establishment of comprehensive trade agreements.

Beyond economic matters, Merz also addressed the field of defense policy, aiming for closer cooperation. He suggested that a decision concerning the procurement of the Boxer system-which is currently under consideration in Portugal-would significantly enhance and improve the integration of their armed forces.
