Hamburg Warned About Speculation After Leipzig Attack Security Remains Complex

Following the mass shooting that occurred in Leipzig, which resulted in at least two deaths, Thorsten Frei, a CDU official, commented on the current security status in German cities, while simultaneously cautioning the public against drawing hasty conclusions.

Speaking during the broadcast “Pinar Atalay” on Monday evening, Frei explained that while authorities are closely monitoring developments on the ground, they are often operating in a speculative period. He stressed that it is currently necessary to gather comprehensive information before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.

When addressing potential security deficiencies in city centers, Frei referenced past major attacks, noting that the memory of events like the incident in Magdeburg demonstrated times when the general safety of residents was jeopardized. He acknowledged the deep psychological impact on citizens, stating that the feeling of not being able to live a completely normal life or move around the city freely is deeply distressing. Nonetheless, he was quick to emphasize that even if potential shortcomings are analyzed in retrospect, achieving absolute, total safety is simply not possible.

Frei concluded by noting that German city centers look profoundly different today compared to even a decade ago. He described the current situation, which requires structural changes to provide “sufficient and considerable security” as an alarming yet necessary development. He finished by communicating his ongoing thoughts and support for the victims and their families.
