Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) was cautious in dampening expectations that a standardized animal farming label might soon apply to multiple types of meat. He stated that the first step must be completed before any subsequent applications.
Minister Rainer explained that his priority is to successfully finalize the implementation of the animal farming label for pork, an initiative he claims the previous government failed to bring to reliable and practical fruition.
He provided a detailed timeline for this specific project. The plan is to submit the draft for notification in Brussels by May. Following that, the proposal is scheduled to reach the Cabinet in August. According to Rainer, if everything proceeds according to plan, the label could come into effect on January 1, 2027, with its application intended for the gastronomy sector starting on July 1, 2027.
When questioned about extending the regulation to cover other meat types, Rainer emphasized the staged approach, reinforcing that the focus must remain on mastering the initial rollout. He reiterated that the primary ongoing objective is to ensure the reliable and practical implementation of the pork labeling system.
